The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
